The robots ARE coming for copywriting jobs.

Maybe yours. Maybe not. I believe that's up to you.

I'm okay with that.

I've been saying for the last 3 years that AI isn't coming for your jobs, a copywriter using AI is. Now? I'm more convinced than ever this is true.

The Cold, Hard NUMBERS

Right now, 30% of workers worldwide are terrified AI will take their jobs in the next three years. In the copywriting world? That fear is even more palpable.

  • Professional services job openings hit their lowest point since 2013 last month.
  • Nearly half of white-collar job seekers couldn't even land an interview last year.

Faster and cheaper than you ever could.

But if that's all you're bringing to the table, lovebug, you were already in trouble.

On one side, you've got the "pen-for-hire" copywriters - the ones who churn out 500-word blog posts for £50 a pop, compete on price, and treat copy like a commodity.

On the other side? The strategic copywriters who understand that writing is maybe 30% of what we actually do.

Here's my prediction (backed by the data):

AI-informed copywriters will absorb 75% of the work from those not using AI and earn 3-4x as much for half the effort.

What AI Can't Do (And Never Will)

A client comes to you and says, "I need an Instagram ad for my $5,000 course."

AI would write you an Instagram ad.

A strategic copywriter would say, "Hold up. Cold traffic to a $5K offer? That's like proposing on the first date. Let's talk about a nurture sequence that actually converts."

That's the sweet spot that's WORTH 4x more money.

AI can't:

  • Challenge a client's strategy
  • Read between the lines of a brief
  • Understand the unspoken fears keeping your ideal customer up at night
  • Navigate the politics of getting copy approved by seven stakeholders
  • Know when to break the "rules" for impact
  • Build genuine human connection through words (without meaningful input)

The Skills That'll Make You Irreplaceable

My highest paying client of 2024? Hired me BECAUSE I was embracing AI, not in spite of it.

How to Position Yourself for the AI Gold Rush

Stop selling writing. Start selling outcomes.

Stop saying you "write words". Start selling a conversion strategy.

Stop avoiding AI. Start making it your bitch. 💅🏽

Here's your action plan:

  1. Master ONE AI tool properly - at time of writing, I suggest Claude (because it just got memory, so now I can't see any strategic advantages to ChatGPT. But this is liable to change with time. It's an always changing arms race.
  2. Specialise ruthlessly - Be the go-to for SaaS onboarding emails, not "I write all the things".
  3. Package your expertise - Create systems, frameworks, methodologies you can hang your hat on (hello, Feelings Not Features®).
  4. Price for value, not time - If AI helps you write in 2 hours what used to take 8, that's YOUR efficiency gain, not a discount for clients.
  5. Build authority - Share what's working NOW, based on experience, not regurgitated advice from 2019.

What This ACTUALLY means

AI is only going to take the jobs of those who refuse to adapt.
